NEW YORK (NNS) -- Nearly 1,500 Sailors and Marines arrived in New York City Nov. 5 aboard the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) to celebrate Veteran's Day events and enjoy the food, shopping and sights of New York.

While in port, Bataan's Sailors and the Marines from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit will take part in community outreach opportunities, participate in Veteran's Day events, including the New York City parade, host tours on board the ship and provide support to the Intrepid Museum's grand reopening.

For Bataan's commanding officer, Capt. Samuel C. Howard, this is the perfect place to celebrate the holiday and a welcomed opportunity for Bataan to show its appreciation to a great Navy town.

"It's an honor for USS Bataan to be in New York City to celebrate Veteran's Day," said Howard. "Of all the ports all around the world, there isn't a better host to Sailors and Marines than the city of New York."

Upon completion of this week's port visit, Bataan will continue at-sea training to prepare for their upcoming 2009 deployment.

Bataan is the fifth ship of the Navy's Wasp-class ships. She was commissioned Sept. 20, 1997 and is the second U.S. Navy warship to bear the name. CVL-29 was an Independence-class light aircraft carrier that was commissioned in November 1943. After serving in both World War II and the Korean conflict, CVL-29 was decommissioned in 1954.
