SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Two Royal Canadian Navy coastal defense vessels made a routine port visit at Naval Base San Diego Nov. 1-2.
HMCS Yellowknife (MM 706) and HMCS Whitehorse (MM 705) spent the weekend at the U.S. Navy's largest west coast surface naval base. Both warships are assigned to Canada's Maritime Force Pacific, and they are based at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt in British Columbia.
NBSD Commanding Officer Capt. Ricky L. Williamson said he always welcomes the opportunity to host our coalition partners at the base.
"The Canadians are our friends and neighbors, and it was a pleasure to have them at Naval Base San Diego," said Williamson. "Our two navies often operate together at sea, and we make routine port calls to their cities. So we were glad to have them here in America's Finest City."
In recent years, NBSD has also hosted visiting ships from Australia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom and a high visibility visit from the Peoples' Republic of China.
Supporting 49 ships, more than 120 tenant commands and more than 35,000 service members and civilian employees, NBSD is home to the majority of the Pacific Fleet's surface combatants, all of the Navy's west coast amphibious ships and a variety of U.S. Coast Guard and Military Sealift Command vessels.
