ASLAV simulators reach major milestones

31 October 2008

The nine Crew Procedural Trainers (CPTs) located at Army bases in Darwin, Puckapunyal and Brisbane have now notched up 10,000 hours of operational use.

Training availability has hit 98.7%, while complete system availability stands at 98.4%. Overall, 1.2 million simulated rounds have been fired across the three sites - representing a massive cost saving compared to the price of real ammunition.

The first Thales CPT was delivered to the Australian Defence Force in May 2006. Since then, the simulators have become an integral part of the ADF's ASLAV program. The ASLAV CPTs enhance cost effectiveness and deliver a safer, more efficient training environment. Housed in ISO standard transportable containers, they provide realistic training for ASLAV commanders and gunners in a fully immersive environment with a complete suite of simulated sights, periscope and out-of-turret visuals.

Thales Australia managing director Chris Jenkins, said: "These milestones are a real credit to the teams involved, and a testament to the hard work of all those associated with the production, delivery and support of this important Defence training capability."

There are currently over 250 ASLAVs in service with the ADF. The 8x8 wheeled armoured fighting vehicles are employed in cavalry roles. ASLAVs have been deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq and East Timor, with operational employment ongoing.
