Harbour security - DUBM-44 new generation mine hunting sonar
28 October 2008
This mine detection system employs state-of-the-art synthetic aperture sonar technology to deliver real-time imagery with unparalleled levels of resolution to users on the host vessel. With its very high coverage rate and exceptionally high reliability in threat classification, the Thales system has now been approved by the French Navy for protection of the Goulet de Brest, the narrow strait that links the Brest naval base with the Atlantic Ocean.
The DUBM-44 sonar is designed to maintain surveillance at depths down to 200 metres. It incorporates the very latest mine detection/classification support technologies. Its ability to resolve and display shadow areas from three different angles (multi-aspect mode) considerably enhances classification accuracy. In addition, the high-performance bottom tracking function of the active towed body contributes to the operational security of the DUBM-44.
The result of 10 years of research, these technologies make the DUBM-44 an operational tool of unmatched capabilities. As well as the French Navy, various other navies around the world have expressed interest in the system.
"I am delighted to make this system available to the French Navy as a key asset to help ensure the security of our ports," said Guy Baruchel, Director Underwater Systems within Thales's Naval division.
