European Parliament visits Georgia, PACE to follow
27/10/2008 15:15 MOSCOW, October 27 (RIA Novosti) - A special delegation of the European Parliament has started a three-day visit to Georgia to meet government officials, international organizations, UN observers, and locals, the delegation head said on Monday.
Marie Anne Isler Beguin said the delegation would focus on the problem of refugees, who have been unable to return to their homes following the Russian-Georgian conflict. The delegation will draw up a report which will form the basis for an aid action plan to Georgia.
According to PACE, around 192,000 people were displaced in the conflict with 31,000 of them "considered to be 'permanently' unable to return to their original place of residence."
A spokesman for PACE said on Monday, a delegation comprising the assembly president and heads of five groups, will visit Georgia on October 30 to meet with government officials.
Russia recognized the breakaway regions on August 26, shortly after a brief conflict with Georgia. The military operation came in response to a Georgia offensive on South Ossetia in August.
