Multi-tiered Air Defense at LWC

RAFAEL TO DISPLAY ITS FULL AIR AND MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM CAPABILITIES AT LWC IN BRISBANE NEXT WEEK

19 October 2008

October 19, 2008, 2008 – Haifa. Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd will display its complete air and missile defense system of systems solution at the Land Warfare Conference and Exhibition in Brisbane, Australia later this month.

Rafael's system of systems (R-SOS) provides a complete solution to the increasing amount of airborne threats encountered around the world. The R-SOS is a layered concept that has been designed to provide optimum protection against all current and future airborne threats.

The concept is composed of two separate double-tiered solutions that tackle two different types of threats. These separate solutions are modular though they speak the same language and are completely capable of operating in tandem with each system's own radar or with similar existing radar.

The newly released Iron Dome and David's Sling missile defense systems make up one of the double-tiered solutions. The Iron Dome will be used for missile defense against short range artillery rockets and David's Sling, produced and developed together with Raytheon, will be used against medium and long range rockets, short range ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Both systems are in the testing phase of development and have been chosen by the Israeli Ministry of Defense for Israel's critical air defense missions.

Rafael's other double-tiered solution is the Spyder Air Defense System. The Spyder-SR slant-launched SHORAD system and the Spyder-MR vertical-launched medium range system are designed to protect against attack aircraft, combat helicopters, bombers, UAVs and UCAVs and stand off weapons. Both systems use Rafael's Derby, air-to-air active radar, beyond visual range (BVR) missile and Python 5, air-to-air dual band imaging infrared (IIR) missile. The system is unique in that it is able combine the use of these two missiles in any given mission. The Spyder ADS is a mature system, has been chosen by a few countries and is competing in several AD competitions worldwide.

"We feel sure that our air and missile defense system of systems (R-SOS) brings a unique element to the air defense market", says Mr. Lova Drori, Corporate Vice President Marketing at Rafael. "If you have several air defense missions or requirements, it only makes sense that each system you choose should be able to communicate with the others. No matter what the airborne threat, Rafael is dedicated to providing its customers with an integrated all-conversing, yet modular air and missile defense solution."

Rafael's expert marketing staff will be available to provide more information on its air and missile defense systems at its stand in Area 23 at LWC from October 28.
