ROTA, Spain (NNS) -- Camp Mitchell in Rota is soon to once again become a main body site for Seabee battalions on deployment, and Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 4 is making upgrades and conducting beautification projects around the camp to prepare for the Seabees' return.
For 25 years, Camp Mitchell served as a second home for Seabee battalions on deployment. When Operation Iraqi Freedom began, the battalion's main body relocated to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, leaving Rota with a skeleton crew.
As the force-structure of the Seabees changes, Rota will become a main body site, NMCB is getting the camp ready.
One of NMCB 4's main projects is working on the renovation of the camp galley. Because of the draw-down of Seabees at the camp, personnel commuted to the main galley on Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota for every meal. But with the amount of Seabees from NMCB 11 arriving in February, NAVSTA Rota's galley can not support all of the Sailors.
Seabees of Rota are giving the galley at Camp Mitchell a much needed face lift.
"Coming on to a deployment with a non-functioning galley in camp that has been unused for close to five years is a morale killer," said Builder 2nd Class(SCW) Robert May. "We were tasked with clean-up and rehabilitating the galley here at Camp Mitchell. A fresh coat of paint, replacing the floor, ceiling and wall tile really make a huge difference."
NMCB 11 will be tasked with preparing the entire camp for the battalion's flag to return and completing any left over projects.
"It's the highlight of my day knowing we are preparing for another battalion," says Constructionman Benny Vela.
The Seabees have spread more than 50 gallons of white paint and replaced hundreds of new tiles to give the galley a refreshed shine. As each day goes by and another task is knocked out, NMCB 4 continues to revive a galley that will soon serve the battalion's main body personnel. Camp Mitchell is well on its way to being the full force camp it once was.
