WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The U.S. Navy's Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV), a directorate of the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, completed work in support of ex-USS Intrepid's (CV 11) return to New York City on Oct. 2.

At the request of the Army Corps of Engineers, SUPSALV removed obstructions and dredged the World War II-era aircraft carrier's berth.

"Approximately 90,000 cubic yards of dredge material were removed," said Michael Herb, director of salvage operations.

SUPSALV is responsible for all aspects of ocean engineering, including salvage, oil pollution response, in-water ship repair, contracting, towing, diving safety, and equipment maintenance and procurement.

Ex-USS Intrepid is an integral part of a sea, air and space museum in New York City.
