SANTA RITA, Guam (NNS) -- U.S. Naval Base Guam Security Department learned more about its ability to respond to emergency situations during a week-long exercise Sept. 8-12.

From Sept. 8-12, Sailors and other participants of Force Protection Exercise 2008 ran through drills that had them in full combat gear all over U.S. Naval Base Guam, practicing procedures for safeguarding gate access, responding to simulated hostage and robbery scenarios, and monitoring harbor entry.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 5; U.S. Naval Hospital Guam; Navy Housing; Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation; and other agencies also participated.

"They're all assisting in testing their force protection levels [and] training throughout the year in order to make sure that we are basically ready in the event of any real-time action," said Master-at-Arms 1st Class (SW) Robert Curtin, training petty officer for Security.

Curtin was on-site at Polaris Point Sept. 11, to coordinate Harbor Patrol's units as they sped through Apra Harbor to stop and deter unauthorized vessels from entering.

Seaman Juan Barrasa, of the Phoenix, was one of 24 personnel who arrived on Guam to help with the exercise.

"It's been an awesome training, and it's great for everybody," said Barrasa.

Barrasa explained the training helps Sailors improve their procedures at checkpoints, and to identify potential threats that might have gone unnoticed by police units, fire department personnel and any other department that deals with Homeland security.

"In case of a real thing, everybody' s prepared for that," he said.
