At least 40 Tamil Tigers were killed and 30 wounded as intense hostilities erupted between Sri Lankan army and the LTTE in Kilinochchi, East Sri Lanka.
The fighting occurred near Nachchikuda and Akkarayankulam (east), both falling in Kilinochchi district. One and half kilometer stretch LTTE's Forward Defence Line (FDL) was captured by the army following the confrontation, All India Radio (AIR) reported quoting Sri Lankan military spokesman.
Security forces launched a major offensive on the FDL of the Tamil outfit located at Karambakkulam near Nachchikuda. 25 Tamil Tigers were killed and 30 others wounded during the fighting. Four security personnel were killed while 15 others were injured.
Another 15 Tamil Tigers were gunned down as both the sides locked horns at Akkarayankulam (east) in Kilinochchi.
The spokesman said that hostilities began as the security forces launched a major counter offensive on the LTTE cadres who were trying to infiltrate an army FDL. No security personnel were killed in the fighting at Akkarayankulam east, the spokesman added.
As the ground troops were surging ahead, Sri Lanka air force carried out two more air raids on LTTE positions on Wednesday. Air force spokesman said that fighter jets pounded an LTTE mortar position at Vannearikkulam and an artillery position at Akkarayankulam, both located in Kilinochchi district.
Earlier two other air strikes were carried out on Wednesday morning. One was on a 'high profile hideout' at Vattakachchi in Kilinochchi and the other one was on a weapons storage facility at Udayarkattukulam in Mullaithivu.
