SANTA RITA, Guam (NNS) -- Friends, shipmates and family members gathered together Aug. 29 at U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) to welcome home Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron (MSRON) 7, Detachment 712 which just returned from a deployment to the Central Command area of responsibility.
As the returning Sailors exited the bus at MSRON 7's compound, they were greeted by cheers from their friends and families while their fellow warriors stood by with respect and gratitude for their service.
Cmdr. Jamie McGrath, commanding officer of MSRON 7, and Command Master Chief (SW/AW) Fred Barton Jr. were first to welcome back their team members and thank them for a job well done.
The Sailors deployed to 5th Fleet January-August 2008 in direct support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Operations Iraqi Freedom. Det. 712's mission consisted of embarked security team (EST) missions and oil platform missions, while standing various watches and providing convoy support.
Despite the operational tempo, MSRON 7 members found time to qualify as expeditionary warfare warriors.
"We remained busy while deployed. Personnel were able to go on other ships to work on enlisted surface warfare and air warfare qualifications," said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Kaire B. Walton.
"We were were able to train with Army and Air Force with base security and reaction forces in case of attack, as we were the back-up force. We were also in charge of medical needs for 600 to 3,000 personnel as Army, Air Force and Marines did turnovers at the base in Afghanistan."
There were many different answers to what the deployed Sailors missed most while they were away. Family, food, walking around freely, driving, relaxing in their beds. All of these were discussed as the group entered a designated room to unload their bags, pick up their mail, grab a bite to eat, and greet their family members and shipmates in a comfortable atmosphere.
