Hamilton Sundstrand's hardware has contributed to a successful first flight of Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.'s X2 TECHNOLOGY™ Demonstrator. Both Hamilton Sundstrand and Sikorsky are subsidiaries of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
Hamilton Sundstrand supplies the X2 TECHNOLOGY™ Demonstrator's flight control computer and vibration control. The flight control computer, part of the aircraft's triplex Fly-by-Wire flight control system, lessens pilot workload while the vibration control adds to the high speed helicopter's cabin comfort.
The X2 prototype aircraft's 30-minute first flight culminated more than four years of technology design, development and testing.
"The X2 TECHNOLOGY™ Demonstrator is expanding the boundaries of helicopter design and performance," said Sal Marano, Hamilton Sundstrand general manager of Airframe Products. "Hamilton Sundstrand is proud to be an integral part of this exciting new technology."
The X2 TECHNOLOGY™ Demonstrator is designed to establish that a helicopter can cruise comfortably at 250 knots, while retaining desirable helicopter attributes such as excellent low speed handling, efficient hovering, and safe autorotation, combined with a seamless and simple transition to high speed.
