DIKHIL, Djibouti (NNS) -- An element of 11 Seabees deployed to Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa began renovations on the Dikhil Elementary School Aug. 15.
Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 4 Seabees, based out of Naval Base Ventura County, Calif., carried on the Dikhil Elementary School dormitory renovation project started in eary August by NMCB 74, based out of Gulfport, Miss. This dormitory will house as many as 80 students and resident advisors throughout the school year, which is scheduled to begin in early September.
Project plans include installing tile floors throughout the dorm, improving the ventilation system by installing new ceiling fans, repairing all the windows and doors, and constructing concrete steps at all entrances.
"With these new improvements, the facility will be easier to keep clean and cool despite the triple-digit heat, giving the residents a better quality of life," said Utilitiesman 2nd Class Travis Salsbury, project crew leader.
The three-month project will also include upgrading the dining area with new electrical wiring for the light fixtures and ceiling fans. The latrine facilities will receive much needed plumbing repairs to sinks, showers and toilets. This work will improve the sanitary conditions for the children.
"I feel the children are getting more than just a school," said Construction Electrician 3rd Class Tricky Legaspi. "They are getting a solid foundation where they can learn and grow and become successful."
NMCB 4 Air Detachment is currently on a six-month deployment supporting the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa.
