Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed 'deep shock' over the attack on a German military convoy in northern Afghanistan which killed one soldier and wounded three others, government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm told the press here Wednesday.

The chancellor offered her condolences to the family of the victim and wished a speedy recovery for those injured in the bomb blast, Wilhelm added.

The remote-control bombing took place near the north Afghan city of Kunduz.

Earlier in the day, the German Defense Ministry in Berlin confirmed the casualties, branding the attack 'cowardly and perfidious'.

Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung has conceded a worsening of the security situation in northern Afghanistan, where German troops are based.

Germany has based around 3,500 soldiers in northern Afghanistan and Kabul as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in addition to police instructors and civilian reconstruction workers.

Some 27 German soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since January 2002, according to official statistics.
