Lockheed Martin Improves Health Care Delivery To Canadian Forces With The Successful Integration Of New Laboratory Information System

OTTAWA, August 26th, 2008 -- Continuing to deliver advanced capabilities to the Canadian Forces Health Information System (CFHIS), Lockheed Martin [NYSE:LMT] today announced the successful implementation of a new Laboratory Information System (LIS) at 14 Canadian Forces medical clinics nationwide. The enterprise-wide system now provides a complete suite of medical information tools that is being used by Canadian Forces (CF) health care workers at 35 sites across Canada.

The new LIS is provided by Software Computer Consultants and has been integrated into CFHIS by Lockheed Martin Canada on-site at the National Defence Medical Centre in Ottawa. LIS improves the management of patient test results and the ability to track specimens for the highly-mobile Canadian Forces (CF) patient population. LIS also increases overall lab productivity due to features such as its system-critical result warning function, advanced rules-based automation, laboratory instrument interfaces and its ability to streamline day-to-day laboratory activities. All of these capabilities combine to improve turnaround times and accuracy of lab results.

“CFHIS integrates best-of-breed commercial software applications into a secure, enterprise-wide system accessible to health care providers located at clinics across Canada and abroad,” said Tom Digan, president of Lockheed Martin Canada. “CFHIS provides a measureable rate of return, not only to the health care administrator, but, more importantly, to the men and women of the Canadian Forces who will see improved access to care.”

With the introduction of LIS, Lockheed Martin conducted training at all 35 medical sites across Canada to ensure ease-of-use and encourage medical practitioners to take full advantage of all of the system’s capabilities. The classroom instruction and hands-on training included more than 1,800 physicians, specialists, nurses, medical technicians, clerks and ancillary staff. They are now able to take advantage of the system’s on-line access to patient records and view electronic results from lab and diagnostic imaging in real-time.

The CFHIS project, awarded to Lockheed Martin Canada in 2002, is a 10-year, $64 (CAD) million effort, designed to enable more than 2,500 Canadian Force health care providers to share patient information securely, and coordinate care for Canada’s 85,000 regular and reserve force personnel worldwide. Once completed, the CFHIS project will be the single largest integrated health information system in Canada, operating in 35 clinics across the country and two European clinics. Future plans include support to deployed operations and interoperability with civilian and allied forces healthcare providers.

For the CFHIS program, Lockheed Martin Canada is leading a strong team of health care partners that includes Emergis (a Telus Company), Purkinje Inc., Adstra Systems Inc., and Soft Computer Consultants Inc.

Headquartered in Bethesda, MD, Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2007 sales of $41.9 billion.
