PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- USS Columbia (SSN 771) completed her depot modernization period (DMP) at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard (PHNSY) and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF) July 25.

Rear Adm. Mark Hugel, NAVSEA Deputy Commander for Logistics, Maintenance and Industrial Operations, also commended the effort.

"[This was] the best Pearl performance on a big availability that I can remember," said Hugel. "Well done!"

Columbia's DMP was completed in the least amount of time among five of the most recently completed DMPs and two ongoing DMPs executed by public and private shipyards.

PHNSY and IMF, both Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) field activities, are part of four public shipyards that play a major role in maintaining America's fleet and providing wartime surge capability to keep the nation's ships ready for combat.

The massive project to perform maintenance and upgrade systems on the submarine began in April 2007. The work package comprised nearly 202,000 man-days of work.

"Our shipyard did well," said Capt. Gregory Thomas, shipyard commander. "We pulled together to deliver a quality product safely back to the fleet. To all of you, great job!"

"[The outstanding performance on the project was] a total shipyard effort," said Columbia Project Superintendent Joseph Mendonsa III. "Everyone made it happen."

Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, along with Intermediate Maintenance Facility, is the largest industrial employer in the state of Hawaii with a combined civilian and military workforce of about 4,700. It has an operating budget of $600 million, of which more than $390 million is payroll for civilian employees. The shipyard, strategically located in the Pacific Ocean, is a full-service naval shipyard and regional maintenance center for the U.S. Navy's surface ships and submarines.
