Poland is the latest European country to abandon conscription in a bid to create a professional army by 2010, news reports said Tuesday.
The government of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk approved Tuesday a major military restructuring program estimated at around 1.15 billion euros.
A well-trained and well-equipped soldier is more worth than dozens of conscripts who are forced to make their military service, Tusk was quoted saying.
The new Polish army will comprise of 120,000 soldiers, according to Defense Minister Bogdan Kilch.
Three-fourth of the contingent will serve in active duty, while one-fourth will be part of a 'National Reserve Army' which will be used in case of natural catastrophes.
The new military reforms in Poland are also aimed at enticing women to join the army.
