ROTA, Spain (NNS) -- Naval Station Rota's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) fitness center completed a $130,000 upgrade in new gym facility rehabilitations Aug. 4.
"This update of our equipment keeps this facility in line with the technological advances in fitness, making it a state-of-the-art center," said Stephanie Whipple, MWR Rota fitness coordinator. "All of this equipment will enhance the many fitness programs offered by MWR, including community exercise classes, command PT, and the fitness enhancement program (FEP)."
The new center features a nine-piece speed line that provides a quick full body workout; an expanded Nautilus equipment area with the same machines as the speed line with additional equipment for those who want a more extensive workout; and six new televisions.
"I hope this gets people to come in more to exercise," said Whipple. "With the new speed line, we will be offering an aerobics class starting in September that will be a 30-minute class using the new equipment. I hope people like it."
This milestone was celebrated during a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Naval Station Rota Commanding Officer, Capt. Bill Mosk.
MWR fitness staff and MWR supply staff teamed together to complete the work in one week with the new equipment funded by Commander, Naval Installation Command along with local funding.
Some of the replaced equipment was moved to David Glasgow Farragut Schools to support their school physical fitness program.
"I love it. It really is an upgrade," said Vicki Kase, who works out in the facility five times a week. "It looks better and there is more and better equipment. I will definitely be stretching out my workout to use the equipment."
