GROTON, Conn. (NNS) -- USS Miami (SSN 755) held a change of command ceremony pierside along Historic Ship Nautilus at the Submarine Force Library and Museum at Naval Submarine Base Groton July 25.

Cmdr. Richard Bryant turned over command of the "Fighting Double Nickel" to Cmdr. Dennis Boyer.

During Bryant's command, Miami completed a successful multi-mission deployment to the European and Central Commands areas of responsibility, earned the 2007 Squadron 4 Battle Efficiency "E" and Communications "C" awards, and the 2006 Squadron 4 Engineering Red "E" and Supply Blue "E" awards.

Capt. Pete Young, who once served as Bryant's commanding officer, was the keynote speaker.

"Rich has special passion, passion for his job, passion for his family and passion for his Sailors, but the most important thing that I see Rich bringing to the table is the ability to walk the fine line of always successfully completing the mission, job one in our business, and doing it in a manner that is as fun as possible."

Bryant acknowledged all those who helped the "Fighting Double Nickel" answer the bell, including Miami's wardroom, chiefs' quarters and crew, squadron commodores and the Groton waterfront.

Bryant specifically thanked the "Centennial Seven," the first seven black officers to command U.S. submarines, three of whom were present at the ceremony.

"As number eight, I have directly benefited from you trailblazers, and I am thankful to you for helping me achieve my vision of service to my country. I am proud to be part of your legacy of love and excellence."

Bryant's next assignment will be at the Joint Staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Arlington, Va.
