7/24/2008 - LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFPN) -- Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates visited Basic Military Training here July 24 and spoke to the Air Force's newest crop of Airmen before they received their Airman's coin in a ceremony.

Before speaking at the ceremony, Secretary Gates toured the Basic Military Training facility and observed the trainee's as they were drilled on proper firearm procedures.

"Earlier today, I got the opportunity to observe some of the training and exercises here," Secretary Gates said. "I'm impressed to say the least. It takes uncommon perseverance to make it through basic training, especially in the Texas heat."

After praising the trainees for their efforts, Secretary Gates talked about how important their service is for the defense of their nation. He said the Air Force is an indispensable tool for battlefield commanders.

"Without the Air Force the war effort would grind to a halt," he said. "Every Soldier and Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan is profoundly grateful to have you overhead."

Receiving the Airman's coin was emotional, said Airman Basic Jennifer Coffin. But, she said, Secretary Gates being there made it more special.

"I was very excited to have him here," she said. "It is such an unbelievable feeling to have someone of such importance come here and support us. It is an experience we will never forget."

Secretary Gate's speech was inspiring and the part standing out the most was that he served in the Air Force as well, Airman Coffin said.

"I thought it was really great that he could relate to us." she said. "It really showed how far we can go and the opportunities we have in front of us."
