NEWPORT NEWS Va. (NNS) -- USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) Sailors are making preparations this July for the upcoming crew move aboard evolution (CMA) with the assistance of the ship's Find It and Fix It (FIFI) team.
Established to assure berthing and bathrooms are functional for the crew, the FIFI team is taking the initiative to create comfortable living conditions in time for CMA.
"With crew move aboard just around the corner, it's very important that we ensure the ship's living spaces are up to par with the essentials needed to make a comfortable living space for Sailors," said Cryptologic Technician 1st Class Jason Amiss, who leads the team's efforts. "The Find It and Fix It team has been working around the clock to ensure our shipmates will be comfortable in their new spaces."
During Carl Vinson's refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) period, equipment in berthing areas such as mirrors, faucets, and door knobs were removed for space preservation. The FIFI team is now concentrating their efforts to look at shipboard living spaces in detail, and ensure the right equipment is in place.
"The reconstruction of the ship has so many different huge projects going on," said Cryptologic Technician 2nd Class Lawanika Davis. "In order to push forward with crew move aboard, it would be very easy to look over small damages and other small details. That's where our team comes in."
A new level of excitement among fellow crew members is evident.
"We want the rest of the ship to be as confident in the crew move aboard as we are," said Cryptologic Technician 3rd Class Nathan Goehl. "From the outside looking in, there is a lot of work to be done. We see it and work on it everyday as a part of this team, so we feel very positive that the crew move aboard will be a smooth transition for the entire crew."
Carl Vinson is undergoing its scheduled RCOH at Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard. The RCOH is an extensive yard period that all Nimitz-class aircraft carriers go through near the mid-point of their 50-year life cycle.
During RCOH Carl Vinson's nuclear fuel will be replenished and the ship's services and infrastructure will be upgraded to make her the most state-of-the-art aircraft carrier in the fleet and prepare for another 25 years or more of service.
