VIRTUAL BATTLEFIELD FOR AIRCREW TRAINING

14 Jul 2008 | Ref. FI007/2008

Farnborough, UK – BAE Systems has held a live demonstration of the latest developments in integrated aircrew training (IAT). This system allows pilots and navigators to train in flight with a mix of live and virtual elements that closely resembles actual operational experience, enabling the honing of procedures used in combat scenarios.

IAT, which can be used across a range of aircraft types, is being developed to enable aircrew to reach operational readiness more cost-effectively. The system improves and fundamentally changes the mission training regime of operational squadrons. It makes day to day training more realistic and means missions can be adapted to introduce new scenarios and add or remove enemy or allied forces. The system also provides aircrew with the necessary displays to recognise these changing scenarios while maintaining situational awareness.

Nigel Davey, Managing Director - Training & Hawk UK explained. “This new concept reduces the demand, and relieves the pressure on expensive, scarce and hard working assets. It provides the ability to synthetically generate equipment and stores which means that aircraft used for training do not need all equipment used in theatre”.

The demonstration, which took place at Warton to a number of RAF personnel, re-created an urban close air support mission. This was accomplished by linking a real Tornado GR4 to a virtual Forward Air Controller, and generating virtual threats. “The live demonstration was very powerful and really brought home the true potential of this capability” said Nigel.

The close air support demonstration covered just one element of the IAT programme. Other areas being developed include scenario generation, mission planning and rehearsal, electronic warfare and air to air combat.

This work builds on a previous air to air combat demonstration in 2005, where BAE Systems linked, in real time, a real aircraft with two ground based cockpits.
