BAE SYSTEMS AWARDED CONTRACT FOR ADDITIONAL VIKING VEHICLES

14 Jul 2008 | Ref. FI015/2008

Farnborough, UK – BAE Systems has been awarded a UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) contract for six additional BvS10 VIKING amphibious armoured all-terrain vehicles. The award follows a June 2008 order for 14 vehicles, bringing the total number of BvS10 vehicles ordered by the MOD to 149.

“The BvS10 VIKING plays an important role in the UK’s ongoing operations in Afghanistan by providing protection and high mobility in difficult terrain,” said Tomas Karlson, director of sales at BAE Systems Hägglunds business. “These additional vehicles will further improve the agility of British forces in theatre.”

The six VIKINGS ordered include three troop carriers and three command post vehicles. Deliveries will begin at the end of 2008 and will include the most current Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR) equipment – extra armour, driver’s night vision equipment and infra-red headlights.

BvS10 VIKING is an amphibious armoured all-terrain vehicle, consisting of two tracked vehicle units linked by a steering mechanism. Over 11,000 BvS10 and Bv206 vehicles are in service in 40 countries. The vehicles will be in service until at least 2023, and will be built, assembled and completed in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.
