HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (NNS) -- The guided-missile destroyer USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81), celebrated the 175th anniversary of the U.S. Consulate in Halifax and the United States' Independence Day a day early, July 3.
Harold Foster, the U.S. Consul General for Atlantic Canada, and Cmdr. Fred I. Pyle, commanding officer of Winston S. Churchill, hosted a picnic and barbecue, attended by more than 400 guests. The guest list included Canadian and U.S. elected and appointed officials and leadership from the Canadian Forces.
The theme for the special event was "Salute to the Military".
Across the pier from Winston S. Churchill was HMCS Charlottetown (FFH 339). The two warships, both part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, provided the backdrop for the celebration on Jetty NB Pier near downtown Halifax. The band "FB and the Dixie Dawgs" provided the music.
The U.S. Consulate General in Halifax is the oldest diplomatic post in Canada, and Winston S. Churchill and her crew were honored to be a part of the celebration which coincided with the 232nd anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
During the celebration, members of Winston S. Churchill's crew provided ship tours to the many distinguished visitors and guests. Along with commemorating the 232nd anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the 175th anniversary of the U.S. Consulate General in Halifax,
crew members also celebrated Canada's 141st "Canada Day" while in port Halifax.
Members of the crew watched a fireworks display from the marina, boardwalk and the ship's starboard bridge wing and forecastle.
