USS Bonhomme Richard, at Sea (NNS) -- After weeks of preparation and communication upgrades, Trident Warrior 2008 (TW 08), a multinational communications exercise, went into full swing June 16 aboard the multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6)(BHR).
TW 08, led by the Naval Network Warfare Command (NETWARCOM) and co-sponsored by Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), seeks to accelerate the delivery of network-centric warfare capabilities to the warfighter and to improve ship to ship and ship to ally communications.
According to Lt. Joe Moore, staff C4I officer and BHR's TW 08 liaison, this year's exercise aims to help the Navy gain insights on technical decisions for future missions and operations.
"Trident Warrior is the perfect opportunity to showcase new and upcoming systems," said Moore. "By experimenting and using these new systems, we give the program managers and contractors, who are developing these systems, new ideas for improvements before fleet introduction."
Moore also said an added benefit of TW 08, is that Sailors are getting the opportunity and experience to be the first to test the new systems.
According to Data Collection Analysis Andy Leidy, BHR has provided outstanding support to the experiments that will yield benefits to the Navy for years to come.
"BHR's support has been absolutely fantastic," said Leidy. "The [Sailors'] can-do attitude and willingness to support our experiments have been great. We are gathering tons of data and lessons learned that will help deliver FORCEnet (a median for network systems) capabilities to the fleet and Sailors faster."
Third Fleet units, including USS Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) and coalition units, will participate in the Western Pacific. Coalition participants will include U.S. Navy ships and staff and those from England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Chile and South Korea.
