Azerbaijan rotates peacekeepers in Afghanistan
08/07/2008 15:32 BAKU, July 8 (RIA Novosti) - Azerbaijan will send 22 service personnel to Afghanistan as part of a regular rotation of its peacekeeping contingent in the war-torn country, the country's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.
A total of 45 Azerbaijani peacekeepers are currently serving in Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), a NATO-led security and development mission in the country.
In April 2007 the peacekeeping contingent was increased from 23 to 45 personnel.
The former Soviet republic has also deployed 150 peacekeepers in Iraq since May 2003 following the U.S.-led invasion of the country.
