VICTORIA, Seychelles (NNS) -- USS Momsen (DDG 92) departed Victoria, Seychelles, July 1, where the crew spent five days exploring its culture and conducting community relations projects.

"Enjoying the culture of different nations is one of the best things about being a Sailor and to take away a memorable experience and give something back is very rewarding," said Momsen Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Michael Sparks.

Momsen's crew participated in training events with the Republic of Seychelles' Coast Guard, June 27 and 30. The training focused on learning shipboard damage control skills and methods.

Seychelles Sailors -- 20 in all -- received classroom instruction to review basic U.S. Navy damage control techniques and equipment, to include hands-on demonstrations in firefighting and flooding repair techniques.

Momsen Sailors also participated two community relations events, at both the local children's rehabilitation center and wildlife conservation center.

Sailors spent five hours of service at the children's rehabilitation center, refurbishing and painting beds, exercise equipment and the exercise pool.

"We had an opportunity to build on the work Sailors from USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) began here a few weeks ago," Lt.j.g. Seth Powell said. "The swimming pool was especially important. After Bulkeley started the initial painting, we needed to complete a second coat of paint before the pool could be used again."

Chief Electrician's Mate (SW) Hermes Arevalo estimated they removed 800 gallons of water before painting.

"With a little teamwork, we were able to de-water and dry out the pool and paint it in less than four hours. It was amazing to see everyone pitch in to get the job done."

Momsen Sailors spent six hours the following day at The Sanctuary, a local wildlife conservation center.

"Almost 25 Sailors were able to help clean up part of the nature area and talk to Capt. Joseph Weston, director of personnel for (Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa)," Chief Hospital Corpsman (AW/SW) Howard Madow said. "He discussed with us the importance of community relations projects and building bridges with other countries."

Following the work at The Sanctuary, Momsen Sailors played a friendly basketball game with the Seychelles National team.
