PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- Personnel from the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) finished the USS Key West (SSN 722) Docking Selected Restricted Availability (DSRA) one week early, June 16.

"Key West was the Pacific Fleet submarine force's number one priority, and the project team delivered her ahead of schedule, providing additional mission-critical days to the fleet," said Shipyard Commander Capt. Gregory Thomas.

"This is a very significant victory for us. Everyone can be proud that Key West is once again 'fit to fight,' and PHNSY and IMF made it happen."

It's the yard's second consecutive early completion of a chief of naval operations submarine DSRA.

According to Project Superintendent Lt. Cmdr. Greg Rose, the work included 50,000 man-days -- 30 percent more than a typical DSRA and with more than the usual amount of valve and tank work.

"Everybody got together, laid out a plan that all could see, worked out all the details and executed the plan," said Rose.

Pearl Harbor, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and IMF personnel united to complete the project ahead of schedule.

"The submarine's crew made a real difference," he added. "They worked well with us. They were definitely part of the team."

PHNSY & IMF is the largest industrial employer in the state of Hawaii with a combined civilian and military workforce of about 4,700. It has an operating budget of $600 million, of which more than $390 million is payroll for civilian employees.

The shipyard, strategically located in the Pacific Ocean, is a full-service naval shipyard and regional maintenance center for the U.S. Navy's surface ships and submarines.
