NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Gary Roughead finished a week-long visit throughout the U.S. Naval Forces Europe (NAVEUR) region with a visit to Naval Support Activity Naples, June 23-24.

CNO spoke with Sailors and Navy civilians at an all hands call and met with senior leadership to receive briefings and discuss issues concerning the NAVEUR area of operations.

"I believe that you have to come, you have to meet, you have to talk to the people that are doing the work to be able to see where the opportunities are and where some of the issues are that we have to address," Roughead said.

CNO emphasized the importance of what Sailors, Navy civilians and their families in the NAVEUR region do every day and how their hard work enables the Maritime Strategy.

"I think that NAVEUR has really been out front with some great thinking and most importantly great actions to bring others into the maritime domain in a cooperative partnership, which is exactly what our strategy is about," CNO said.

Prior to Roughead's trip to Naples, he visited Israel where he toured two Israel naval bases and met with high-level Israeli officials to discuss areas of common interest, to strengthen and further develop global maritime partnerships and to explore areas in which to cooperate to increase maritime security in the region.
