SINGAPORE (NNS) -- U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy volunteers -- 40 in all --opened the Singapore phase of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2008 with a community relations project (COMREL), June 21.

During the COMREL, the Sailors and Coast Guardsmen painted, gardened and performed yard maintenance at the Archdiocesan Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ACMI).

While in Singapore for CARAT, Navy and Coast Guard teams will perform 14 hours of community service on projects with the Republic of Singapore Navy. These projects include beach clean-up, maintenance and yard work, sports events with local children and interaction with disabled adults.

Crew members from U.S. Coast Guard cutter Morgenthau (WHEC 722), USS Jarrett (FFG 33), USS Tortuga (LSD 46), USS Ford (FFG 54) and USS McCampbell (DDG 85) volunteered to help with the exercise's inaugural event in Singapore.

CARAT, an annual series of bilateral maritime exercises between the United States and Southeast Asia nations, enhances maritime skills and operational cohesiveness between the participating forces. CARAT exercises began in 1995.
