One soldier, 16 Tamil Tigers killed in clashes in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka-Clashes-Soldier Killed
At least 16 Tamil Tiger rebels and one Sri Lankan soldier were killed in running gun battles in north Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
While two Tiger rebels were killed in Palampiddy in Vavuniya on Monday, one LTTE cadre was gunned down in Kovithunchukulam in the same region later in the day, Indian official media reported here quoting official sources.
According to the Defence Ministry, LTTE transmission confirmed that two of its cadres were killed in northeast Welioya. Separately, one rebel was shot dead in Janakapura in welioya on Monday, the ministry said.
The troops also unearthed 40 anti-personnel mines from Janakapura area on Monday, the army said.
In a separate incident, two fighters were gunned down and at least 24 others injured in fierce battles in Janakapura and north of Kiriibanwewa in Northeast Welioya on Monday, it said.
Meanwhile, troops killed two tiger cadres and injured three others in Jaffna on Monday, the military said, adding three soldiers also suffered injuries in the incident.
One soldier was killed while three others received mortar injuries in Welioya on Monday, the army said.
As many as six Tiger rebels were killed in Paripakkandal in northeastern Mannar on Monday, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said.
Meanwhile, six civilians from un-cleared areas surrendered to the Navy in Pariharakandal in Mannar, the MCNS said.
