The New Generation ERC90
Eurosatory, 16 June 2008
Panhard, profiting from the experience acquired from fitting new engines to the Army’s ERC 90 Sagaie, is offering the 6x6 New Generation ERC 90. The ERC 90 NG builds on the qualities of the first generation ERC 90: a very well-armed and easily deployed vehicle. The ERC 90 NG uses the same power train as the up-dated vehicles of the French Army (an MTU engine of 170 hp and a six-speed Renk automatic gearbox). This new power train gives the ERC 90 excellent cross-country performance, thanks to its very high torque (660 Nm at 1300 rpm). In addition, the increased power has enabled the electrical turret drive to be modernised and also eases the crew’s workload in combat situations. Many improvements have also been incorporated to take account of new operational requirements: the armour has been strengthened (STANAG 4569 Level 3 over the frontal arc and Level 2 over the rest of the vehicle) and particular attention has been paid to protection against mines. To ensure its deployability, its combat weight remains limited to 10 tonnes. Finally, air conditioning is factory-fitted to the vehicles, enabling the crew to remain in action over long periods in any climate. A large range of turrets can be fitted to the ERC 90 NG, depending on the client’s priorities: the TS-90 (Nexter), the HS-90, the CSE-90 (CMI) or the 40mm CTAI.
The ERC 90 entered service with the French forces in 1986. This light tank, fitted with a 90 mm gun, quickly became the spear point of the rapidly-projectable armoured component. Easily deployable by C-130, the ERC 90 has been employed in nearly all external operations, notably in the Balkans, Côte d’Ivoire and Chad. Its tactical and operational mobility, and the deterrent nature of the 90 mm gun, have made it a valued asset in combat, as well as in the control of violence.
