
Aircraft Mishap Near Naval Air Station Fallon

FALLON, Nevada (NNS) -- At 12:10 p.m. on June 13 two aircraft on a routine training mission crashed approximately 50 miles east of Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon near Middlegate, Nevada.
The aircraft involved were a two-seat F-5 Tiger assigned to the "Saints" of Fighter Squadron Composite 13 (VFC-13) based at NAS Fallon and a single seat F/A-18C Hornet assigned to the "Valions" of Strike Fighter Squadron 15 (VFA-15) based at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Va.
A search and rescue helicopter launched from NAS Fallon and arrived on scene at 12:25 p.m. Aircrew from the F-5 ejected safely and were transported to Naval Air Station Fallon. The F/A-18C pilot was killed in the accident. The name of the pilot is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The cause of the mishap is under investigation.
