HUACHO, Peru (NNS) -- Peruvian officials welcomed USS Boxer (LHD 4), to their country, June 10, with a ceremony in the town square of Huacho, during the Pacific phase of Continuing Promise (CP) 2008.

CP is a humanitarian civic assistance (HCA) mission enabling both U.S. and Peru to collectively address regional medical concerns and develop effective, economical solutions that can be used in the region.

"We're very honored to be here in Peru," said the Mission Commander for CP 2008, Capt. Peter K. Dallman. "We have personnel from around the world aboard Boxer to support this mission."

The ceremony gave Dallman the chance to explain the scope of services that Boxer will be providing during CP and also gave various Peruvian officials the chance to welcome the ship.

"We're happy Boxer is here in Huacho partnering with us during Continuing Promise," said Dr. Luis Custodio Calderon, regional vice president. "The services you will provide are a great help, especially because it extends our ability to reach more people and care for them."

Calderon identified long-term benefits of the operations in the area including training experience as keys to fortifying Peru's partnership with the U.S. in the future.

"The experience gained on both sides through sharing knowledge and working together allows us to improve. The lessons and knowledge learned opens the possibility of our health care providers helping with future operations in the United States," Calderon added.

"We're committed to giving Boxer the best welcome to Peru and maintaining our positive relationship."

"We're looking forward to working side-by-side with you and we hope you are able to learn from us as we learn from you," Dallman said of Boxer's commitment.

Boxer's mission exemplifies the U.S. Maritime Strategy which emphasizes deploying forces to build confidence and trust among nations through collective maritime security efforts that focus on common threats and mutual interests.
