16 killed in fierce clashes in northern Sri Lanka

At least 15 Tamil Tigers, including three women, and a soldier were killed in fierce clashes between the two sides as Air Force jets pounded rebel positions in Sri Lanka's embattled northern region, officials said in Colombo Tuesday.

The fighter jets launched air sorties at the LTTE forward defense lines at Muhamalai in Jaffna, PTI reported here quoting Sri Lankan Defense Ministry.

"The air assault was launched this morning at pre-identified LTTE concentrated positions," it quoted Air Force officials as saying.

Separately, bodies of three women LTTE cadres were found in Alankulam area of Mannar following a confrontation with the army yesterday, the Defense Ministry said, adding another rebel was killed in a battle in Mampullukulam in the same region.

At least three Tiger rebels were gunned down in Yodawewa area of northeast Welioya yesterday, the Media Center for National Security (MCNS) said.

A Tamil Tiger was shot dead at Wedamurippu in Vavuniya yesterday, the MCNS said, adding three more LTTE cadres were killed in Kirribbanwewa area of Welioya yesterday.

One soldier also lost his life during the confrontation in Kirribbanwewa, it said.

In another incident at Kirribbanwewa, troops killed an LTTE cadre in a clash yesterday, the military said.

Three LTTE rebels were killed in Pallaikudiruppu area of Akkaraipatuwa in eastern Sri Lanka today, the Defense Ministry said.

According to defense sources, an armed group lobbed two hand grenades at the police and army personnel engaged in the search operation this morning in the area.

Separately, at least ten LTTE cadres were wounded in two different incidents in Palampiddi in Vavuniya yesterday, the MCNS said, adding four more Tiger rebels sustained injuries in the region later in the day.
