ARICA, Chile (NNS) -- USS Kauffman (FFG 59) rolled out the red carpet on May 26, and hosted a reception for distinguished guests while pierside in Arica.
Among those visiting were the President of the Appellate Courts, Minister Rodrigo Olavarria Rodriquez; the Naval Commander of Arica, Capt. Tomas Orellana; the Rector of the University of Tarapaca, Sergio Pulido Roccataliata; the Arica Port Captain, Cmdr. Eric Solar Olavarria; and many Chilean Army, Navy, and law enforcement dignitaries.
Ship's bells, honorary sideboys, and boatswains' pipes introduced the exquisite evening for all to enjoy.
Culinary Specialist 1st Class (SW) Derrick Oates, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 40's leading culinary specialist said, "The reception was one of the more elegant settings I've had the pleasure of helping prepare. The lights from local fishing vessels with the sunset lit mountains in the background accented Arica's deep-rooted flavor of history and Chilean culture."
Music, flowers and ice sculptures decorated the ship's flight deck as the guests dined on a variety of cheese, special meats and hors d'oeuvres.
Culinary Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Leon Brown, Kauffman's leading culinary specialist explained it was a pleasure to work with DESRON 40 staff.
"It was the first time Kauffman and DESRON 40 staff collaborated to put on a festive culinary display of American and Chilean cuisine complimented by Chilean wines and beverages for U.S. naval dignitaries and Chilean ambassadors."
For dessert, a special cake decorated with a Chilean flag was served.
Senior Chief Machinist's Mate (SW/AW/SS) David Graham, Kauffman's newly assigned command senior chief, noted, "The almost informal theme of the gathering, after the arrival of the distinguished guests allowed both the junior and senior personnel to kind of open up and just ask questions. The reception was an all out success from the scope of Partnership of the Americas down to the food being served."
Partnership of the Americas (POA) 2008 is an ongoing engagement operation sponsored by U.S. Southern Command, and is designed to enhance interoperability and regional security throughout South and Central America and the Caribbean. POA 2008 features at-sea multinational military exercises as well as cooperative in-port events.
