BREMERTON, Wash. (NNS) -- Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF) welcomed their new commander at a change-of-command ceremony, May 23.

PSNS and IMF Commander, Capt. Mark R. Whitney relieved Capt. Daniel J. Peters, who took command during 2005 and is scheduled to report at Naval Sea Systems Command.

The ceremony featured numerous flag officers, PSNS and IMF leadership, as well as local government officials. Vice Adm. Paul E. Sullivan, commander, Naval Sea Systems Command was a guest speaker at the ceremony.

"Dan, the success of your shipyard, as the fleet experienced in the last three years, reflects your exemplary leadership skills and the commitment of those who work for you," Sullivan said. "The success of the shipyard is a testament to an environment which fosters great teamwork. The commander sets that environment."

During Peters' stint at PSNS and IMF, the command completed more than 73 intermediate and depot-level ship availabilities; saw the opening of Puget Sound Navy Museum, formerly historic building 50, open in downtown Bremerton; initiated the stand-up of the PSNS and IMF detachment in Yokosuka, Japan; and developed fly-away teams to Guam in support of submarines.

"Truly, you have been a world class operation, led by a world class naval officer," Sullivan said about PSNS and IMF. "Dan, your service here at Puget has been just remarkable. I'm extremely proud of the job you've done here."

Recognizing Peters' leadership at PSNS and IMF, Sullivan presented Peters with the Legion of Merit medal for his time as commander.

Peters went on to thank the attendees, the personnel of PSNS and IMF, and the local community.

"It is all of you, the people of the Northwest, that have made this the best three years of this Sailor's career," Peters said. "The last three years have been an exciting journey.

"To the Sailors and employees of PSNS and IMF: you're the best in the business," Peters said. "As I've said many times as your commander, 'thank you for what you do so well.'"

Whitney has previously served as the assistant deputy commander for industrial operations at Naval Sea Systems Command.

"I am humbled, I am honored and I can't wait to get started," Whitney said after taking command. "Be safe and I'll see you around the shipyard."
