WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Adm. Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations, announced Capt. James J. Shannon's selection for promotion to the rank of rear admiral and assignment as commander, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Washington, May 19.

"I am honored that the Navy has granted me yet another great opportunity to support our Sailors and Marines in this capacity, and I will be proud to work alongside the great military and civilian professionals of the Naval Surface Warfare Center that serve our nation today," said Shannon, acknowledging his Navy and military family.

As commander, NSWC Shannon will lead the Navy's full spectrum research, development, test and evaluation, engineering, and fleet support center for ship systems, surface ship combat and weapons systems, littoral warfare systems, force warfare systems and other offensive and defensive systems associated with surface warfare and related areas of joint, homeland and national defense systems from the sea. He will also provide the Navy's core technical capability for the integration of weapons, combat and ship systems into surface ships and vehicles.

Shannon currently serves as executive assistant to the assistant secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition (ASN (RD&A)), Washington. The ASN(RD&A) organization is responsible for the development and acquisition of Navy and Marine Corps platforms and warfare systems.
