59 Tamil Tigers, 2 security personnel killed in north Sri Lanka

At least 59 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres and two security personnel were killed amidst air attacks by Air Force fighter jets on the rebel stronghold in Sri Lanka's embattled north, officials said here Wednesday.

Sri Lanka Air Force MI-24 helicopter gun ships launched close air support mission ahead of security forces defense line in Muhamalai in Jaffna Wednesday morning.

According to PTI report, Sri Lankan Air Force spokesperson, Wing Commander Andrew Wijesooriya said the attack was targeted at a Tiger's mortar launching pad and an LTTE's gathering place located three kilometers ahead of the security forces defence line in Muhamalai.

At least one LTTE cadre was gunned down in Vediyamurippu in north- western Mannar yesterday, the Media Center for National Security (MCNS) said.

Meanwhile, a security personnel belonging to Civil Security Department was shot dead in Buttala-Kattargama road in south-eastern Sri Lanka yesterday, officials said.

At least four Tamil tigers were killed in Nadunkani in Vavuniya yesterday, the MCNS said, adding three more LTTE rebels were gunned down in Thunnikddukulam area in the region yesterday.

Separately, troops killed at least 14 tiger rebels including two female cadres in confrontations at Periyamadu in Vavuniya yesterday, the army said.

At least ten Tiger rebels were killed and four injured in separate confrontations yesterday at Mundimurripu in Vavuniya, the military officials said.

As many as three Tiger rebels were gunned down in Kunakankulam in North-eastern Welioya yesterday, they said, adding two LTTE cadres were killed in Paliyankandal in the region yesterday.

While one LTTE rebel was killed in Kokkuthuduwai in Welioya yesterday, another rebel was shot dead in Kiribbanwewa area in the same region yesterday, the MCNS said.

An attack at a police guard point in north-central Sri Lanka left one constable dead after he was admitted to the Anuradhapura hospital in a serious condition.

At least three tiger rebels were shot dead in clashes at Kuhankankulam, Paliyandankulam, Kuttankulam, and North Janakapura in Welioya yesterday, the Defense Ministry said.

Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry said that at least 17 LTTE cadres were reportedly killed and nine others injured during intense clashes in Vavuniya yesterday.

These clashes took place in Nadunkerni, Nenukkuddikulama, Mullimurippu and Periyamadhu areas on the Vavuniya front, the ministry said.
