Commander Naval Surface Forces Visits USS Howard

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Vice Adm. D.C. Curtis, Commander, Naval Surface Forces, visited the guided-missile destroyer USS Howard (DDG 83) May 8, where he addressed the crew on the future of the surface Navy.
During his visit, Curtis was taken on a tour of the ship, held a meeting with the chief petty officers, and enjoyed lunch with all of the officers on board.
"Everything we do must have at its core, the goal of enhancing the warfighting readiness of surface force ships and Sailors," said Curtis.
Curtis discussed his plan to enhance the readiness of the surface Navy with the officers, which consists of a "back to basics" approach on all aspects of warfighting to include training, maintenance, damage control, military bearing and uniforms.
In his meeting with the chiefs, Curtis expressed his dedication to warfighting readiness includes the personal and professional development of each and every Sailor. He also discussed how the surface Navy needs to continue to push each Sailor to be their best.
"It was a great opportunity to speak directly to a key decision maker," said Chief Fire Controlman (SW) Russell Evenson. "It is rare for a vice admiral to take the time to personally visit and listen to the concerns of a ship's crew."
Crewmembers saw the visit as an indication of Curtis' dedication to the Sailors of the surface Navy and his vision for naval surface forces in the future.
"Vice Adm. Curtis' exceptional knowledge and dedication to the surface Navy will directly improve warfighting readiness and we are honored to be a part of the fight," said Cmdr. Curt Goodnight, Howard's commanding officer.
