VALPARAISO, Chile (NNS) -- More than 300 distinguished guests boarded USS George Washington (CVN 73) (GW) May 15 for a reception co-hosted by the U.S. Ambassador to Chile, Paul Simons and the Commander, George Washington Carrier Strike Group (GW CSG), Rear Adm. Philip Hart Cullom.

The reception highlighted the partnership between Chile and the United States and provided the two countries military and civilian officials and opportunity to strengthen that bond.

"Your presence here today only serves to emphasize our friendship and partnership as individuals, as navies, and as countries," Cullom said.

"As U.S. ambassador to Chile, I know our common interests in this endeavor also serve to strengthen our overall bilateral relationship," Simons said. "Chile and the United States enjoy a strong partnership that includes the military-to-military cooperation the GW visit represents, but also across the economic, political and social arenas. We are more than partners, we are friends."

GW anchored off the coast of Valparaiso, May 14 to begin a scheduled four-day port visit, part of the group's Partnership of the America's deployment.

The GW CSG's Partnership of the Americas deployment operationalizes the U.S. Maritime Strategy by its efforts to work cooperatively with South American maritime partners to promote interoperability and trust that will ultimately lead to greater hemispheric security.

The GW CSG is composed of the aircraft carrier George Washington, Carrier Air Wing 17, and Destroyer Squadron 40, which includes the guided missile destroyer USS Farragut (DDG-99) and the guided-missile frigate USS Kauffman (FFG 59).
