SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- In a morning ceremony, May 14, the U.S. Navy and the Port of San Diego announced the transfer of the leasehold of the 1220 Pacific Highway property to the Port of San Diego, 41 years ahead of schedule, returning the 3.35 acre waterfront parcel to local control.

This agreement was made possible by use of special legislation.

"This significant announcement makes possible the initial phases of the Northern Embarcadero visionary plan, a plan intended to benefit the entire community," said Commander, Navy Region Southwest Rear Adm. Len Hering. "This lease hold transfer will take place in two phases. Phase one will transfer approximately 14,000 square feet of the parking lot next to Harbor Drive, about 58 parking spaces, adjacent to Lane Field."

The second phase will occur upon completion of conveyance of the port property, once the Port of San Diego has established a replacement facility to for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest, currently located at the Pacific Highway complex. This replacement site has not yet been determined.

This transfer was made possible by close cooperation between the Navy, city, port, county and private industry for the benefit of San Diego.

"Today's revitalization of the downtown waterfront from Seaport Village to Laurel Street, takes real partnership," Hering said. "The Navy is incredibly pleased to work closely with those involved to make that dream come true."

"This effort is just one more example of [how hard] we are working together to reduce our [Navy's] footprint in downtown San Diego and allow more access to the federal properties and lands that were previously off limits to this city," said Hering.

Signing the agreement with Hering, was Commissioner Stephen Cushman, from the Port of San Diego.

"None of this would have been possible, quite frankly, without Adm. Hering and the United States Navy working with us to make this all happen," said Cushman, who also recalled the days when the parking lot on the corner of Broadway and Pacific Highway was a wooden stadium baseball field.

When completed, the North Embarcadero from Seaport Village to Laurel Street will be a world-class, Pacific Rim promenade of business, retail, recreational, hotel, government and open space that will benefit the San Diego community at large, and will draw tourist and business activities from around the world to San Diego's waterfront.
