GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (NNS) -- Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 74 Detachment Guantanamo Bay (GTMO) Seabees took a break from their regular tasks - near the halfway point of their deployment - to participate in a base-wide cleanup April 22.
The Seabees cleaned a hillside overgrown with brush that had hidden scrap metal.
"This trash has been out here for years," explained Constructionman Daniel Garrido. "Even though we are only cleaning up a small section of this base, we are still making a difference, and that's what Seabees do!"
Equipment Operator 2nd Class Chad Kissinger, crew leader for one of the many projects this deployment, said, "I love doing this," as he loaded the stake truck with a sheet of rusty metal. "We are sweaty, the sun is beating down on us and I can't move more than three feet without getting tangled in the vines. We are working hard and yet we are still having a blast!"
The crew took a quick break for lunch, prepared by the Naval Station chief's mess at Ferry Landing, before heading to the landfill to dispose of the steel.
"My Seabees work hard," Chief Steelworker (SCW) Donald Farwell explained. "They make more of an impact to the community than they think they do, whether they are participating in a base-wide cleanup or building a K-Span that will be used by the community upon completion."
Following the trip to the landfill, the crew rejoined their fellow Seabees at the project sites; the base is cleaner, the area is clear; its just another day on deployment.
