PENSACOLA, Fla. (NNS) -- The Naval Aviation Symposium 2008 was held May 8-9 at the National Naval Aviation Museum on board Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola.
Rear Adm. Gary Jones, commander, Naval Education and Training Command welcomed attendees to the event.
"Remember that most of the young men and women in the back of this atrium who are taking their first steps toward joining us in naval aviation were either not born or just infants when the first Naval Aviation Symposium was held 22 years ago," Jones said.
"Pensacola is the perfect place to recall the personal debt we owe to those who made us who we are today—the instructors, the mentors, the pilots and the commanding officers with whom we served, as well as the heroes who inspired us to climb into a cockpit or work on a flight deck. It's also the place to reflect upon our duty to those who follow behind us."
The symposium began with the enshrinement of five new members of the Naval Aviation Hall of Honor and held its first two sessions: "Space Shuttle: Naval Aviation's Leadership" and "Naval Aviator P.O.W.s: Return With Honor."
The symposium concluded May 9 with Vice Adm. Thomas Kilcline, Commander Naval Air Forces, hosting a panel on current issues in naval aviation and an address by Vice Adm. David Venlet, Commander, Naval Air Systems Command.
