SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Eleven Seabees from Amphibious Construction Battalion(ACB) 1 deployed aboard USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) May 1 for a five-month deployment.
"I am so exited to take part in this year's Pacific Partnership mission on board the USNS Mercy," said Lt. j. g. Lars Herman, Pacific Partnership liaison officer. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of something larger then each of us."
During the deployment, the Seabees will apply their construction skills to humanitarian projects to facilitate the construction of health clinics, community centers, classrooms, and other renovations to community buildings. They will visit Australia, the Philippines, Vietnam, the Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste
"I am honored to be one of the chosen few to take part in this mission," said Equipment Operator 3rd Class (SCW) Luis Cruz. "This is the chance of a lifetime to help others less fortunate and travel at the same time. Seabees don't always get a chance to do these kinds of missions, so I am going to make the best of it."
