15 Dead in Afghan Suicide Bombing

By VOA News
29 April 2008

NATO officials in Afghanistan say a suicide bomber has killed 15 people and wounded 14 others in the eastern part of the country.

A spokesman for NATO-led forces says the attack took place Tuesday in the province of Nangarhar, close to the border with Pakistan. He said militants opened fire on security forces before the bomb detonated.

He also said all the dead were Afghans. Initial reports had put the number of wounded at 25, but that tally was later reduced.

Earlier, NATO-led forces said they have entered southern Afghanistan's Helmand province in an assault on the Taliban-held stronghold.

Military commanders said hundreds of U.S. Marines pushed into the town of Garmser early Tuesday, in the opium-poppy-growing region near the Pakistani border. Troops entered the region by helicopter and by convoy. There has been no immediate word about the militants' response.

In the United States, new U.N. envoy to Afghanistan Kai Eide is scheduled to meet with U.S. President George Bush Tuesday.

On Monday, Eide spoke to a Washington group that promotes cooperation between nations - the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace - saying more resources are needed in the country, and that they must be better allocated.
