Coalition Forces in Iraq Kill Iranian-Trained Militants

By VOA News
24 April 2008

The U.S. military says coalition forces in Iraq have killed four Iranian-trained militants, and captured five others during operations north of Baghdad.

The military says soldiers battled militants Thursday in Rashidiyah after apprehending a person suspected of receiving weapons and finances from Iran to lead attacks against coalition forces.

In other violence, a bomb blast in a Baghdad supermarket killed at least three people and wounded 15 more.

Also today, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband held talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on a previously unannounced visit to Baghdad. Details of their discussions were not immediately available.

Britain has around 4,500 troops serving in Iraq.

On Wednesday, U.S. Lieutenant General Lloyd Austin urged radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr to do more to stop attacks by his militiamen on security forces.

Fierce battles between Sadr's Mahdi Army militia and Iraqi government forces have killed more than 300 people in the predominately Shi'ite Sadr City area of Baghdad in the past month.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
