The Maoists have won double the number of seats of their nearest rivals in Nepal's 601-member Constituent Assembly at the end of the counting votes for the landmark poll held on April 10, election officials said today.

The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has won a total of 217 seats in the Constituent Assembly, PTI reported here quoting election officials from Kathmandu.

The Maoists received 29.27 per cent of the total votes and the Nepali Congress and Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist- Leninist) got 21.13 and 20.33 per cent respectively.

The 29.27 per cent of votes have given the Maoists 97 seats under proportional representation.

The Maoists had already secured 120 of the 240 seats under the first-past-the-post system or direct voting system.

Nepal's Election Commission completed the nationwide counting of votes for the 335 proportional representation seats late last night.

The Nepali Congress, the dominant party in the country, got only 107 seats, including 37 under the first the first-past-the-post system.

The new Nepalese government is empowered to nominate candidates to fill a further 26 seats.
