NMCB 4 Welcomes a New Commanding Officer

PORT HUENEME, Calif. (NNS) -- Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 4 held a change of command ceremony, April 11 at Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme where Cmdr. Dean A. VanderLey relieved Cmdr. Craig S. Hamer.

VanderLey was previously assigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Installations and Environment) as the executive assistant to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Installations and Facilities).

Upon graduation from Officer Candidate School in 1991 and completion of the nuclear power pipeline in 1993, VanderLey served aboard the USS Michigan (SSBN 727) and was a lead instructor at the Trident Training Facility in Bangor, Maine.

In 1998, VanderLey transferred to the Civil Engineer Corps and reported to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard with a follow-on tour to Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland. In 2002, he reported to NMCB 7 as the operations officer. In 2005, Vanderley reported to Commander, Navy Installations Command where he first served in the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) branch and then as branch head for Facilities Planning.

VanderLey is both Seabee Combat Warfare and Submarine Warfare qualified. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Washington, a member of the Acquisition Professional Community and has a Masters of Science in civil and environmental engineering (Construction Management). His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (four awards) and the Presidential Unit Citation.

Hamer took over as NMCB 4 commanding officer in 2006. "It has been my privilege to serve with all of you. NMCB 4 is the best battalion that there is and it has been my honor to serve as your commanding officer."

Hamer has orders to Washington D.C. as the deputy chief of staff for the Vice Chief of Naval Operations.
