NORFOLK (NNS) -- Sailors attached to Weapons Department G-2 division, Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), took aim at virtual targets using the Navy's Professional Range Instructional Simulator (PRISM) at Naval Station Norfolk, March 19.
The PRISM system, installed in August 2004, provides Sailors a method to stay current with their weapon qualifications without firing live ammunition.
"The gun qualification demonstrates that you have knowledge of the weapons and how to use them," said Chief Aviation Ordnanceman (AW/SW) Lucien Penn.
As the crew grows, more armed security patrols will be needed to defend the ship from possible terrorist attacks. With this growing demand comes the need for more Sailors to be qualified to carry a weapon. G-2 is the first division to re-familiarize itself for armed patrols by using the simulated weapons fire provided at the PRISM facility.
"The PRISM system is designed for anti-terrorism and force protection training utilizing real firearms that have been converted over to the PRISM system," said Ron Sunday, civilian contractor for the Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic PRISM program manager.
The PRISM system simulates real time events and adjusts to how trainees react during the simulation using pre-determined outcomes, Sunday said. This non-conventional way of training provides a safe way for personnel to get practice without the use of live ammunition or the risks associated with loaded weapons.
"This will never replace live fire, but it will augment it, as far as giving people the experience," Sunday said.
Live-fire exercises along with the PRISM system will provide Sailors the ability to be fully qualified to stand the armed watches necessary for the protection of the Navy's newest aircraft carrier.
"It's good preparation for a real life scenario," said Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Jeremy Rooks.
